Range: the biggest gap between a claim and a test we've had to write up
Vanpowers claims up to 73 miles, and to the brand's credit it publishes the test conditions right alongside the number: a 165.35 lb load, the lowest pedal-assist level, on flat terrain.[source] That's more disclosure than most brands offer.
Consumer Reports, testing the bike independently, reported approximately 22 miles.[review] We're not going to pretend to know exactly why the two differ so much — CR doesn't publish its full protocol outside its paywall, and a test run at higher assist, with a heavier rider, or on hills would legitimately land far below a lowest-assist flat-ground figure. But a 73-mile claim and a 22-mile measured result is the kind of gap you want to see before you buy, not after, so we're putting it on the page.
The honest counterpart: the Air Max's up to 121 miles is also a manufacturer best-case pedal-assist number, not an independent test result, and nobody should read it as a daily expectation either. What the Air Max does bring to the argument is capacity you can check on a spec sheet — 921.6 Wh across two hidden 460.8 Wh packs against 692 Wh in one, roughly 33% more energy on board. Capacity isn't range, but it's the part of range that isn't a marketing decision.

These look close enough to compare, which is exactly why they're worth separating. One number includes everything you carry; the other is the rider alone. A 250 lb rider with a 20 lb bag is inside the Air Max's rider figure but over the UrbanGlide-Pro's combined figure — and neither number should have bike weight subtracted from it.
