That's a ~17 lb gap, and it is entirely explainable: the Alpha 2.1 carries one 374 Wh battery and a single-speed belt, while the Air Max carries two batteries totalling 921.6 Wh plus a 7-speed drivetrain and full commuter kit. Vvolt rates the Alpha 2.1 at up to 40 miles from its 374 Wh pack in low assist, dropping to about 22 miles in high assist.[source] Electric Bike Report's independent range test landed close to those claims: 35.6 miles at the lowest assist level and 22.7 miles at the highest.[source] That's honest advertising by Vvolt, and worth crediting. It's also roughly a third of the Air Max's rated 121 miles from 921.6 Wh — about 2.5× the battery capacity. Motor, torque and how assist actually feels
The Alpha 2.1 runs a 350W rear hub motor (550W peak) rated at 45 Nm.[source] The Air Max's 750W (900W peak) motor and 85 Nm rating are close to double on both counts, and it assists to 28 mph against the Alpha's 20 mph.[source] Vvolt's own argument against a bigger motor is fair, though: a 44 lb bike simply needs less push than a 62 lb one.
