Weight: the Wing's clearest win

This is the Wing Freedom 2's biggest advantage, and it's a real one. At around 39 lbs[review] it's roughly 23 lbs lighter than the Air Max's ~62 lbs — the difference between a bike you can one-hand onto a car rack or up a stoop and one you'd rather ride than carry. Two independent sources put the Wing at ~39 lbs on the same 6061-aluminum frame,[spec] so it isn't a marketing-only figure. If your reality involves stairs, a fourth-floor walk-up or lifting the bike onto transit, the Wing is the easier bike to live with.

There's a nuance worth knowing, though. The Air Max's frame is the lighter of the two — a 7.7 lb Toray T800 carbon monocoque. Its higher total weight comes almost entirely from what it carries: two hidden batteries instead of one, plus wider 2.5" tires. You're not paying those extra pounds for nothing — you're paying them for the range and power rows below. Whether that's the right trade is entirely about how you ride.

Range and power: the Air Max is the distance bike

The Wing Freedom 2 is sold with a choice of 36V batteries — roughly 8.8, 10.4 or 14 Ah — rated for about 35, 45 or 60 miles respectively.[review] That's a sensible spread for city errands and short commutes, and the removable pack is easy to bring inside to charge. The trade-off is capacity: even the biggest Wing battery is roughly 504 Wh, while the entry battery is closer to 317 Wh.

The Air Max runs 921.6 Wh across two hidden batteries and is rated up to 121 miles under ideal pedal assist — about the Wing's top-end range claim, and roughly the range of the entry-battery Wing. On output, the Air Max's 750W (900W peak) and 85 Nm are meaningfully more motor than the Wing's 550W and 45 Nm[review] — the kind of gap you feel on a hill or hauling groceries. On top speed the Air Max reaches 28 mph versus the Wing's roughly 25 mph in its highest setting (the Wing is limited to 20 mph out of the box).

One honest caveat on all range claims, ours included: 121 miles is a best-case, pedal-assist figure, and real-world range depends on rider weight, terrain, wind, temperature and how much throttle you use. The structural point is architecture — two batteries versus one.

The sensor: torque vs cadence

If you only compare one line on the spec sheet, make it this one. The Air Max uses a bilateral torque sensor, which measures how hard you're actually pedaling and meters motor power to match. The Wing Freedom 2 uses a cadence sensor[review] — it reads whether the pedals are turning and applies a preset level of assist. Neither approach is broken, and plenty of good budget bikes use cadence sensors. But a torque sensor generally gives a more natural, bike-like feel and finer control — especially pulling away from a stop or easing power on a climb. It's the single biggest difference in how these two bikes feel to ride.

Price: the Wing starts lower, the Air Max gives more per dollar

Where they tie: gears and wheel size

Two rows are genuine ties, and we won't spin them. Both bikes run a Shimano 7-speed drivetrain — the Air Max with a 52T chainring and 14–28T freewheel, the Wing with a Shimano Tourney derailleur[spec] — so if you were hoping the carbon bike would out-gear the budget one, it doesn't. Both also roll on 26" wheels; the Air Max runs wider 2.5" tires for a bit more cushion, the Wing narrower 1.75" tires for a lighter, more road-efficient feel. That one's preference, not a winner.
